Unfortunately, many lack tact and dive into things headlong without giving the reader a foundation to stand on. The excitement to start passing on everything they've learned is captivating, but ultimately, it's a poor strategy. To understand something about naturalistic observation and its research value, one must first understand the practice itself; both humans and animals can be subjected to naturalistic observation. Logistical issues tend to be the availability of participants, ensuring that their privacy is respected, and whether observations will be performed where the observer can be seen. Both approaches are used in research on the naturalistic observation of animals and humans. By being hidden, researchers are confident that observed people do not behave differently because they are being observed. This method effectively reduces or eliminates any possibility of reactivity and this is the goal, ensuring validity by allowing the subject to act in their most authentic nature without the interference of an external force. While this is ideal, there are times when observers cannot hide, and in those cases they must collect data for a long enough period to infer whether or not their presence is influencing the actions of research subjects. Privacy concerns greatly limit the use of naturalistic observation to locations that are generally accessible to the public in the context of human but not chimpanzee observation, so the topic greatly affects the methodology. Nature research subjects can be found in a myriad of different locations ranging from tropical forests, to bars, to urban centers, aka the Time Squares of the world.
