As the school time increases from 6 to 8 hours a day, the extra 2 hours should be well spent to reach its potential, otherwise there will only be another 2 hours wasted. Trachtenberg suggests giving teachers more time for preparation and letting students engage in other activities (214), but which ones? Activities often require teacher supervision. Those supervising activities will need more time to care for students and will have little time for preparation. If the extra time is only for teachers, it is not a question of changing the school timetable, but rather the working hours of teachers. Is the 8-hour school timetable proposed to serve students or teachers? Even if we allocate an hour for each, how can you guarantee that students will enjoy participating in such activities? Perhaps some simply want to rest or spend time with family. The extended hours could make these students dislike school even more, creating an opposite effect.
