Adult Learning Environment It is important to understand that not everyone who enters college is ready for the experience. Every entity continues to shift blame instead of sharing responsibility, politicians intercede and cause more dissent among each other, teachers in school districts are forced to teach according to standardized tests, college professors are frustrated by the lack of skills possessed by freshmen, and yet the reality is that there doesn't seem to be a solution to the problem. Adult basic education is in a category of its own as it is essential for employment and to combat this stubborn society characterized by illiteracy and poverty. One way to achieve this is to help low-income, first-generation individuals understand the importance of getting an education. There is a huge focus on educating first-generation, low-income individuals, but some instructors fail to understand what it truly means to come from a disadvantaged background. One of the local superintendents understands this, so each year he requires the district's instructors to participate in a mandatory activity that exposes teachers to the lives of the students they teach. Every year veteran teachers and new teachers visit the poor neighborhoods where their students come from on school buses. Adult students have more responsibilities than the traditional student, and many have different motivations for pursuing an education. For example, many jobs require adults to go back to college to receive a promotion. Some require it for additional professional training, while others may require it because the position requires a specific degree. While learning theories have been the focus of discussion thus far, it is time to take a closer look at teaching philosophies. For the purposes of this section, we will review the results of the Principles of Adult Learning Scale survey and how it relates to personal teaching styles. Additionally, paradigms of liberal and behaviorist teaching styles will be discussed in relation to teaching philosophies.
