Mental illness has been documented in Chinese texts since the first millennium BC ("Mental Health"). We will focus only on the Western world of America and Europe. Over the past 175 years, progress has been made in the way mental illness has been treated and looked at. Mental hospitals throughout history have gone from inhumane to more humane, but we still need to improve mental health stigma to give the mentally ill the help they need. Historically, conditions in mental hospitals were horrific during the eighteenth century. “Report of the Metropolitan Commissioners in Lunacy to the Lord Chancellor (extract), United Kingdom, 1844” talks about conditions in an asylum in Haverfordwest in 1842. There were 18 patients in total, nine males and nine females. In addition to the 18 patients there were also the caretaker and his wife and no other help due to lack of funds. Patients are still discriminated against and isolated because of their mental illness. I see all this too much in my work. My job is to work with children with developmental and behavioral problems. I work hard with my team to help these children get the help they need to live productive lives with their mental illness. I am their advocate and make sure their voices are heard. I also don't want to see them fall through the cracks of the system. The same goes for any person with mental illness. There are too many patients who don't know about services like the one I work for or don't know how to get the help they need. This highlights the need for medical care to be more accessible and easily available. It is so important to continue to improve our psychiatric hospitals and the services provided to patients so that we can continue to change mental health for them
