A toxic manager is one who helps those who are struggling with organizational change deal with the various hassles associated with change (Palmer, Dunford, & Akin, 2009). Change that is not communicated well is sudden and premature or its unrealistic expectations create toxic feelings in employees that must be managed. One characteristic of a toxic manager is the capacity for empathy and the willingness to take action to try to address the pain and suffering in others caused by organizational change (Palmer et al., 2009). In the selected article, Savannah was a project manager tasked with implementing a new program to change the existing promotion system based on seniority instead of performance (Frost, 2006).
