1817 to 1825: A period of time that oversaw the presidency of the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe, whose tenure later became known as the Era of Good Feelings. The end of the War of 1812 and the "era of good feelings" are often seen as a time of cultural, economic, and political nationalism; however, during the era the tension between nationalism and sectionalism began to grow. Tariff and banking issues were constantly disputed, inevitably dividing society. Not only had that society split, but slavery conflicts began to increase dramatically, which created the problem of sectionalism, leading to Henry Clay's Missouri Compromise in 1820. Many areas had divergent views on slavery and voting, the which only strengthened the belief that sectionalism was taking over the modicum of nationalism that persisted. Despite the fall of the Federalist Party in the early 19th century, John Marshall continued to exert a strong Federalist influence on government, which acted as a catalyst to ignite political controversy. In the 1819 trial of McCullough v. Maryland, Marshall found Maryland's taxation of the Second Bank of the United States unconstitutional, which gave even more power to the central government. (Doc D) The majority of the American population was against his decision and refuted it because many people believed that having a strong central government was bad because if a wrong decision was made, it would affect the entire union, whereas if there was state government had been a strong government, a wrong decision would have simply damaged the state. However, this wasn't the only time the economy failed in the early 1800s. In 1816, John Randolph addressed congress and stated that it was unfair to tax poop... middle of paper... the result of slavery. The last major point where sectionalism was seen was in the 1824 election because people only voted for the people in their sectional region, rather than who they thought was the best candidate. Furthermore, all the candidates, Jackson, Adams, Clay and Crawford all came from the same party, Republican, which contributed to the already growing sectionalism.
