Interdisciplinary Research QuestionWhat are the impacts of integrating ESE students into a general education classroom? The most commonly seen problem with integrating special education and general education students is that students' individual needs are sometimes overlooked. Justification of the interdisciplinary approach To justify my interdisciplinary approach I will show how drawing on the relevant disciplines I have chosen offers different views and perspectives presenting different explanations to the problem.Relevant disciplinesEducation – adaptations, modifications, instructor trainingSociology – socialisation, acceptance, understanding, respectPsychology – self-esteem, belongingProblem analysis with evaluation of intuitionsThe intuitions addressed are the preconceptions of education, socialization and behavioral problems of mainstreaming ESE students. It is assumed that socialization and behavior can play a positive role in inclusion, offering students the opportunity to improve their socialization and behavioral skills, while at the same time breaking down the social stigma of being different. However, this can also have negative effects on students. Not offering ESE students adequate monitoring when socialization and behavior are involved can lead to embarrassment and alienation from peers. It is believed that inclusion can affect all students because educational needs are not met. With the need to make accommodations, teachers spend more time with ESE students and offer less challenging instruction to general education students. Conflicts between disciplines The conflict is whether socialization and behavior play a complex role in the educational needs of ESEs. .... half of the document ... fight, and if the decision is to integrate the student, then a decision should be made whether the student will benefit from full or partial inclusion. If they are to be integrated, they will need to be carefully monitored and ensure that all their needs are met to be successful in the general education context. The pros and cons of inclusion will need to be examined repeatedly to be sure that the plan works in the best interest of the student and does not impact the academic goals of either the special needs student or the general education student. As more and more students with special needs are placed in general education classrooms, the general idea is that this is the best placement for them based on their needs. However, for this to be successful, the students, parents and teachers involved will have to work hard and work together.
