There are many things that have happened in history that have helped make family and consumer sciences what they are today. I'll talk about some specific things that happened that I think helped shape what family and consumer sciences are today. It is the beliefs of family and consumer sciences, the history of family and consumer sciences, and who was involved in making family and consumer sciences a discipline. Early on, family and consumer science beliefs were meant to educate women on how to be leaders. Family and consumer sciences have historically taught individuals to be well-rounded and have also helped raise the standard of living of American families. Originally the components that constituted the discipline of family and consumer sciences included taking care of the family, cooking, cleaning, sewing and knowing how to take care of money. At that time, that was the role of women in society. However, the time period has changed and the roles of women have also changed. It is no longer a society where the man goes out and works and the woman stays at home and takes care of the house and the children cook, clean and sew. Now we often see the roles reversed where the woman goes out and works, and the man stays at home and cooks, cleans and takes care of the house and children. Both genders need to know how to do all these things, how to balance a checkbook, how to pay bills or sew a button on a shirt. With the rise of single-parent families, it is even more important for both men and women to have skills that were once considered only by men or... middle of paper... microphones for this new field. This has helped the discipline of family and consumer science tremendously. Annie Godfrey Dewey also helped organize the inclusion of home economics in schools and colleges for students to learn. Nearly a century later, at the 1993 Scottsdale Conference, the name home economics was changed to the modern name of family and consumer sciences because it better fits the focus on helping strengthen individuals and helping communities thrive. These were all very important parts of family and society. consumer science, which helped it evolve into what it is today. It's not just something for women, it's something everyone can learn from and be a part of today. Family and consumer sciences have become more than simply cooking, cleaning, and sewing; it's being able to take skills and apply them in real life to improve the quality of life for everyone.
