Although he succeeded, his primary goal was bigger than baseball and was to more profoundly challenge democracy in America. Baseball for him was just a stepping stone to achieve something much more important, human rights. As Jackie would say, “Baseball is just a pastime, a sport, an entertainment, a way to blow off steam. But appealing to every color, race, sex, or political opinion” (Robinson 24). He became involved in organizations such as the NAACP (National Association of Advanced Colored People) when he retired from baseball in 1957 (Robinson 25). He became a major spokesperson and fundraiser. Likewise, he immersed himself in the civil rights movement during the early 1960s as an ardent supporter of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., raised money for the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), and marched in many of Martin's manifestations.
