In addition to the influence of culture on expression, Matsumoto, Yoo, and Fontaine (2009) discuss the concept of context differentiation (CD), defined as rules surrounding the display of emotions that further imply the degree to which my personality has been influenced. Because my family life taught me that emotions should not be expressed outwardly, especially with physical contact, my expression of emotions has grown very inward.
