Immanuel Kant was a philosopher born on 22 April 1724 in Königsberg, East Prussia. Kant dedicated his life to writing, reading and teaching. During his time, Kant began his philosophical journey by believing in rationalism, which is the study of anything based on reasoning or knowledge that justifies an idea. He studied it for years, but thought a different view was better. That vision was the vision through metaphysics. Metaphysics is the basis of all philosophy that analyzes abstract concepts of life such as time and space. With this Kant discovered the theory of universalizability, which is the general moral principle that allows us to judge whether a maxim is moral or not. A maxim, in short, is the result of an action in addition to the purpose of that original action. Kant formulated another theory known as the principle of respect for persons, which states that you should treat people with the utmost respect as if they were worth everything to you. Before Kant's time, a famous philosopher named Aristotle developed a theory. In Aristotle's mind, he believed that a common way to judge someone else's morality was to evaluate the consequences of that person's actions. This is known as the consequentialist ethical theory. Although his theory may have seemed like an accurate statement, Kant thought differently and believed that consequentialist ethical theory was nonsense. He believed that whether someone is good or bad does not depend on its consequences. “Kant argues that what gives moral value to a particular action is not the kind of action it is, nor are the consequences of the action determined by the psychological maxim that motivates that action.” (Bailey, p.54). It states that whatever action you take, ...... middle of the paper ...... you dare with force to oppose it. An example would be life and death. Wherever there is life, there is always death to oppose it. Kant's theory of how good must have evil and evil must have good is exactly like what yin and yang are, so there is no doubt why I agree with Kant's statement. Regardless of whether I find his statement plausible or not, I truly believe that Kant's theory of morality is the most accurate. I don't think a person's morality is based on the consequences of their actions. The consequences are uncontrollable because everyone's minds are different. What truly demonstrates a person's morality are the actions and choices they choose and what intention they have towards them. A person's willingness to do good or to do bad is what makes a person good or bad. That said, I believe Kant's thought is the basis of modern philosophy and is what people still believe today.
