The Beautiful OceanAn Analysis of Lord Byron's Apostrophe to the Ocean "Either decide to stay in the shallow end of the pool or go out into the ocean," ha said Christopher Reeve who was once Superman, spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair paralyzed from the neck down. In life, the ocean often serves as an analogy. People have exclaimed that their emotions are like ocean waves. Lonely people often compare their feelings to those of a person stranded on an island in the middle of the ocean. Even Lord Byron recognized these features in the ocean. In the poem Apostrophe to the Ocean, Lord Byron talks about his love for the ocean. In the seven stanzas written by Byron, each discussed the different reasons for his love for the Lord. Byron, like all other Romantic poets of his time, loved nature. In their poems they sometimes wrote about nature and how beautiful it is. Sometimes even romantic poets love nature more than other human beings, as Byron exclaimed in the poem: "...I love not man less, but nature more...". Page 856. The ocean is a huge part of nature, nature does not only exist on land as some people think. However, the world's oceans make up about sixty percent of the world's surface. There is therefore a nature that is not seen every day by man. A perfect example of nature in the ocean would be scuba diving in the coral reef. I personally love nature because when I need to relax and enjoy life, I tend to turn to nature. Nature can provide entertainment for most people as long as they learn to appreciate it for what it is. Furthermore, what is wonderful about nature is that nature is never the same in one place in the world. For example, there are no two Grand Canyons or Yellowstones in the world, but only one of each. Make those locations sought after and special. Nature can also provide comfort to people who are struggling mentally or physically. Clearly, I appreciate nature as the Romantic poet Lord Byron, as his colleagues Percy Shelley and John Keats, loved to write about nature. Those three poets; Byron, Shelley and Keats gave birth to a new idea of appreciation of nature known as Romanticism. Those poets not only inspired the people of their time period, but they also inspired future generations like me. I am truly fortunate to have lived in Wyoming in the early part of my life because I have a better understanding of the beauty and pure curiosity I developed for nature. If I hadn't lived in Wyoming in my early life, I might not have felt the same feelings that I would have felt if I had lived in Chicago. Once I'm older and have children, I hope to teach them the same lessons I learned when I was a
