Citizen vs. Police Bureau I interviewed Lieutenant Harris of the Hattiesburg Police Department. He has been a lieutenant for two years and before that was a Sargent with the Hattiesburg Police Department. Lieutenant Harris is from Gulfport, Mississippi and has been with the Hattiesburg Police Department for seven years. Since he's been a lieutenant, he's been over the fence attacking the team. The Net and Strike teams are the drug prevention section of the police department. They also deal with gang violence and disorderly conduct. Lieutenant Harris has exceptional management and leadership skills. They are both necessary when working in this type of environment, while in law enforcement. The challenges of this police department have been the image of the police department. Citizens often complain of rudeness, unnecessary force, and the typical complaints of a police department. The Hattiesburg Police Department has a horrible relationship with the community. This one in particular, Lt. Harris, said this is a big problem in the city of Hattiesburg. The issue I will compare is the perspective of an officer while being a citizen, versus that of a police officer. I asked Lt. Harris about the mental and physical challenges that arise when being a police officer. Lieutenant Harris is an African American male, who is a police officer. In the black community, sometimes becoming a police officer has a bad stigma, especially if you're black. Lieutenant Harris talks about the change from being a commoner to becoming a police officer. The first issue that he brought to my attention was that some friends that you had before, when you became an officer were no longer there because you were a police officer. He stated that the police are… a paper medium… special individuals and have some of the same qualities as military personnel. Officers are often asked to work a stressful job for average or below-average pay. Communication is also important for officers to be able to relate to modern citizens and other officers. Judgment is also important for officers, and it's something that comes as your career as an officer extends. Stress is also a problem that citizens deal with on a daily basis. But police officers put additional pressure on their families and themselves. Police work can be strenuous work, and the ability to overcome the fatigue of one's job is necessary not only for their health, but also for them to pass the physical tests required by their agency. Therefore, your personality and how you handle stress and driving will help you make the transition from civilian to police officer.
