EssayThe short stories "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Brief Happy Life of Francis Mocomber" were both written by world-famous author Ernest Hemingway. The two stories are written completely independently of each other; however, both stories have great similarities in the time and place they take place. Hemingway is a very methodical writer in his choice of words. Reading these two stories a second time, the reader finds notable differences in the writing style the author uses in each story. To demonstrate this, three sentences from each story will be compared and contrasted to show differences in word usage, word connotation, and to find out which story is written better. The first two sentences to consider are: "A fourth glided downward, to run with swift legs and then sway slowly towards the others", from the story "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "On the opposite bank of the stream that Macomber could see, above the trees, the vultures circling and falling down", from the story "The short happy life of Francis Macomber". The next two sentences are "'You bitch,' he said," from "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "'Why don't you cut the bullshit a little, Margot,' said Macomber, cutting into the eland steak and putting some ' mashed potatoes, gravy and carrot on the fork pointing downwards piercing the piece of meat. Finally, the third set of sentences is "He shot this good, rich bitch, this gentle destroyer of her talent, very well," from the story "Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "'That was a good shot,' said Wilson," from the story "A Brief Happy Life." then swing slowly towards the others", from the story "The Snows of Kilimanjaro". In this sentence Hemingway describes the actions of a vulture that lands. If compared with the corresponding sentence from the story "The Brief Happy Life of Francis Macomber", "On the opposite bank of Macomber Creek he could see, above the trees, vultures circling and swooping down,” the reader can see similarities in the two sentences. Both phrases have to do with vultures flying and landing. However, there is a significant difference in the author's use of words in each of them. In the first sentence, the word “planed” describes the vultures dec...... middle of the paper......” is an adjective, describing the noun “shot”. Note that the word “fired” is used in different ways. In the first sentence “shoot” is an action, a verb, while in the second sentence “shoot” is a noun. The second sentence is better than the first. The first sentence is filled with descriptive words, leaving each word with less value. In the second sentence the word “good” is in the center of the sentence making it a better defined and more coherent sentence. When compared, these two sentences are similar only in their differences, for example the meaning of the word "fired" in the first sentence and the word "fired" in the second sentence are the same words with different perspectives. In conclusion, the story, “The Brief Happy Life of Francis Mocomber” is the better written of Ernest Hemingway's two stories. The author's use of words and connotation in this story, while similar to that of “The Snows of Kilimanjaro,” makes the reader clearly visualize the images he is trying to illustrate. The three sentences from "The Brief Happy Life of Francis Mocomber" are better written, use better words, and better help the reader imagine the author's intentions.
