Topic > Comparison of Olympia and a little taste of external love

The history of art involves different movements during different periods of art. Two of these movements include the art of the twentieth century and the twentieth century, both of these periods began with a stylistic movement of which one contributed much of the character to the latter. This essay will describe and then compare/contrast “Olympia” and “A Little Taste of outside Love” by Edouard Manet and Mickalene Thomas respectively. In Edouard Manet's “Olympia” which is an oil painting, made on canvas and made in 1863 -65. In the painting “Olympia” it depicts a naked white woman in a reclining position on a bed in the foreground and attended by a black maid. On the far right of the painting there is a black cat looking mysteriously at the viewer presents the white woman with flowers that could be a gift based on the way she presents them. The naked woman is also deliberately adorned with a black ribbon around her neck, a single fashionable slipper on one foot, while the other is. casually falling, flowers in her hair and a similar bracelet on the hand. White women can also be seen with the neat and modest style hand. In the background of the painting there is complete darkness, this shows the obvious contrast between the darkness of the background and the light of the naked woman lying on the bed. This draws a lot of attention to the subject of the painting. The paleness of his skin is almost as if he has become one with the bed. The colors and style of the painting are even more realistic. The artist uses quick and rough brushstrokes to give the effect of shapes. In the painting "A Little Taste of outside Love" created by Mickalene Thomas there is a mixed media artwork with......half of the paper.... ..d by men. As a result, women have become an object and a spectacle. Whereas, during the 1970s of Thomas' time, women painted women and women had a voice that they used to empower the black race rather than be subjugated. One of the main themes of the two paintings is nude against nude. According to John Berger “to be naked is to be oneself and to be naked is to be seen by others and yet not recognized for oneself” (goodreads, 2014). The woman in Manet's painting represents the idea that they were a sight to behold. However in Thomas' paintings they evoke another feeling of nakedness and being yourself and the black women's movement. These two paintings, "Olympia" by Edouard Manet and "A Little Taste of outside Love" by Mickalene Thomas, are two famous and exquisite paintings that were created in two different eras that evoke different reactions depending on their time.
