Topic > Hero in Beowulf - 1035

Bragging is a common trait among heroes, and something Beowulf has done consistently throughout the story. In lines 142-189, for example, Beowulf describes what a brave fighter he is and boasts about how he killed 5 beasts in one battle. To summarize, he says that he heard of the desperation of the Danes and came to the rescue, and although he was willing to risk his life to save Hrothgar and his people, it was obviously also for the fame. He assures Hrothgar that the situation will be resolved and does his job well, killing Grendel as well as Grendel's mother after she sought revenge by killing one of Hrothgar's best men. His arrogance manifests itself again in lines 450-458, after he fearlessly enters the lake where Grendel's mother lived. He says that: “He leaned into the lake/Was not waiting for anyone's/answer; the high water covered him...". Beowulf also fought Grendel's mother alone, and although he ultimately won the battle, it almost cost him his life. Ultimately, Beowulf met his end at the end of the story, when he volunteered to fight a dragon that was terrorizing the Geats. In lines 606-612, after Beowulf utters his final boast, “I never knew fear, in youth I fought/In endless battles. I am old now/But I will fight again, I will still seek fame,/If the dragon hidden in his tower dares/To face me...", he went to face the problem, only his sword in war broke and his followers broke him they leave fear Beowulf was essentially defenseless until a single warrior, named Wiglaf, showed up and killed the dragon for him. Even though Wiglaf was not seriously injured, Beowulf lay on the ground, knowing that he was dying and that these were his last. moments on Earth, so he only asked Wiglaf to be buried with the treasure that was in the castle where the dragon lived in. This shows that even the toughest fighters like Beowulf are not as invincible as them
