William Shakespeare, a famous playwright of the Elizabethan era created his own version of the historical tale of King Duncan I and King Macbeth of Scotland, The Tragedy of Macbeth. Shakespeare alters some historical details of his play to create a more dramatic and twisted effect. Although he keeps some aspects of the play similar to the actual story, Shakespeare's work varies in terms of characters, events, and settings. One detail of the story that Shakespeare changes to fit his play is the characters. Three of the most important characters in Shakespeare's tragedy of Macbeth are Duncan, Macbeth, and Malcolm. Shakespeare keeps these characters similar to the historical person they are modeled after. Shakespeare's Duncan is the King of Scotland and has two sons, one of whom is Malcolm. In history, King Duncan I of Scotland does in fact have a son named Malcolm, later King Malcolm III (Military Defeat and Death). Shakespeare's play also has a character called Macbeth who kills King Duncan to become king. In the story, however, Macbeth kills Duncan in battle instead of killing him (Macbeth). The third character is modeled on King Malcolm III. Shakespeare's Malcolm is Duncan's son who wants to see Macbeth brought to justice by being put to death. This character remained faithful to his historical model. Another aspect of the story that Shakespeare alters for The Tragedy of Macbeth is the events that take place. One detail that Shakespeare changes is how Macbeth kills Duncan. Shakespeare's Macbeth kills King Duncan I while he sleeps as a guest in his castle. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth discuss in advance the king's fateful end and how Duncan's guards will be framed as... center of the paper... was based on in the areas of characters, events and settings. Change these aspects of the story to create a more intriguing story. Making dramatic works based on historical events is one of the reasons Shakespeare became the popular poet and playwright he was during his lifetime. Works Cited Biography of Macbeth." Bio.com.
