As a college student, I feel deeply connected to Marjorie as her personality is quite similar to mine. Similarly, I could feel Bernice's “vague pain” (Fitzgerald, 3) and realize her sensitivity to things that happened to me when I was younger. To understand the author's main idea, I did a lot of research on the Jazz Age. Therefore it can be seen that the reader's background is also crucial when responding to these literary texts. The main audience the writer addresses is women, who have different desires and needs than men. The meaning of the text often comes into competition when we have a better understanding of our personal identity. We interpret the text based on our psyche, our experiences and our judgments.
