Topic > Defining Reflective Management - 2881

This essay establishes and explores the concepts of "reflective managers within contemporary organizations". The point to make is that thoughtful managers can be essential to contemporary organizations. Since there is a huge volume of established theories in the field of reflexivity, this essay attempts to focus on a few in-depth theories related to reflexivity. This will be discussed throughout the essay with the use of relevant examples. Before exploring “reflexive managers within contemporary organizations,” it is necessary to first understand the term “reflexivity.” First of all, the prefix “re” implies going backwards, against and inverted. The Latin term flectere means to bend backwards, which involves looking back at our actions. Pollner (1991) defined reflexivity as an insecurity about the underlying assumptions, discourse, and practices used in describing reality” (p. 370). In other words, it intends to critically examine the assumptions underlying our actions, the conflict of this behavior and from a broader perspective, what passes as good management practice of “leaning back” and re-examining ourselves and our reality. The concept of reflexivity has been pondered across a range of disciplines including science, sociology and psychology by theorists such as Clifford 1986; Gergen, 1994 and Latour, 1988. Reflexivity has many different concepts and definitions by many different theorists; this suggests that it does not have a universal notion, so it can be difficult to explore concepts of reflexivity. Reflexivity takes an epistemological and metatheoretical view of our practice and knowledge. Schon (1983) began with work on the reflective professional. 'Reflexive' differs from the term reflexivity; reflectivity is about your… middle of paper… n (Ortmann, Sydow, & Windeler, 2000). This is where a thoughtful manager would fit in well; have the ability to help build the organization where they would think outside the box. “Such practice is important for management because it helps us understand how we constitute our realities and identities in interactive ways and how we can develop more collaborative and responsive ways of managing organizations” (Clunliffe, 2004). It also includes opening up phenomena by reflexively exploring more than one set of taken-for-granted meanings. In the organization we use language to give meaning to social situations. However, language is simply a construction of reality rather than a mirror of objective truths. Therefore, to make sense of and utilize the phenomenon we must be critically reflexive in order to explore alternative management styles..
