The founder of Apple Computers, Steve Jobs, died recently, and news outlets have paid tribute to him by listing his accomplishments and playing videos of him speaking. One such clip showed Jobs giving a commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005, and the speech contained a treasure trove of information. In one of my favorite parts of his speech, Jobs said, “you can't connect the dots by looking forward; you can only connect them by looking back. So you have to have faith that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust something: your instinct, destiny, life, karma, whatever. (Jobs, 2005) This advice is simple to understand intellectually, but it also proves difficult to follow. Many people need to understand how to achieve their dreams before attempting to follow them. I delayed going back to school for years because my dream of practicing law seemed unrealistic. So how do you take a leap of faith and trust that the dots will connect? I believe the answer to this question comes through tools like personality tests and philosophies like those laid out in the book Think and Grow Rich and in the video The Secret. I found that the Meyer-Briggs personality test gave me a better understanding of myself, and a glimpse into how others might perceive me. Meyers Briggs classified me as ENTP (Extroverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Perceiving). 5% of the population is classified as ENTP. In ENTPs, Extrovert and Intuition dominate the personality type and they desire an understanding of the world they live in. Their strong intuition allows ENTPs to quickly and accurately process information to evaluate a situation. This understanding of people and situations gives them the ability to choose what they want. Unlike the genie of Aladdin, the genie of the universe does not limit the wish to three wishes. Grants an unlimited amount of unlimited wishes. This Genie requires the wisher to use visualization to aid in the interpretation of incoming signals. The Secret provides a philosophy for all those who believe that thinking and getting rich requires too much work. Everyone contains within themselves the ability to achieve their goals in life. This gives me a feeling of empowerment and control over the final destination of my life. Many truths in life enable each of us as individuals to take the necessary steps to achieve wealth, happiness and fulfillment. Personality tests allow individuals to analyze the qualities they possess, and philosophies, such as those set forth in Think and Grow Rich and The Secret, guide us in their use. Works Cited Stanford
