In fact, Ferguson says leadership is an important component that determines whether teachers are receptive to equity strategies and work hard to make them successful. The discussion of equity and excellence, therefore, suggests the need for a school movement that can effectively educate all students. However, Ferguson makes clear that a movement toward “excellence with equity” – a movement that consistently aims to achieve high standards of achievement among children of all racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds – requires both the collaborative effort of parents and the school reform.
