It ends with a completely failed attempt and they all end up killing each other. This novel (of course) is completely fictional, but it shows how, without laws that impose some sort of punishment on those who disobey trust in the most extreme ways, people will never be able to fully trust each other (Golding). So yes, trust and the rule of law can replace each other when one becomes much stronger, but they are still codependent. The law requires trust to function, and trust needs the law to protect it
