Damaged by Cathy Glass: Book Review Damaged by Cathy Glass is a memoir of the authors' experience and relationship with an out-of-control little girl named Jodie. Jodie was placed in foster care due to concerns regarding her parents. She was placed with Cathy, an experienced caregiver who has raised children for over 20 years, in hopes of preventing her from being institutionalized. Cathy was the fifth caregiver Jodie had been assigned to in four months. Cathy quickly realized that Jodie was a very disturbed and abused child. Jodie was a handful due to her learning difficulties and wild anger. His challenging behavior and learning difficulties consisted of a shortened attention span, uncoordinated movements, kicking people, making himself dirty, destroying everything in sight, not adhering to family rules, nightmares and hallucinations. During her time with Cathy, Jodie gained her trust and began to disclose to Cathy that she had been sexually and physically abused by her parents and other family members. While Jodie lived with Cathy, she tried to give her love and affection in hopes of helping her, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to help the damaged eight-year-old. Victimization is the process of turning someone into a victim by harming or taking advantage of him or her in some way. Jodie is a prime example of childhood victimization. He suffered forms of abuse so harrowing and disturbing that his mind suppressed them. This is called betrayal blindness. Betrayal blindness (Freyd and Birrell, 2013) means that a person does not know or cannot see what is in front of them. Betrayal blindness occurs when a person overlooks obvious signs or instances of betrayal or the state of mind in which a person is unable to… middle of paper… why abused children may behave in ways negative. Captures the terrible effects of abuse on an innocent child. The book also shows the perception of what a person might go through. For example, when you see a child acting out of control, it may be because he or she has been abused. We shouldn't judge a book by its cover because we have no idea what a person has been through and why they might behave a certain way. Very often people tend to blame others instead of feeling empathy. This story can help educate others about how abuse can affect people and can help society as a whole move forward with empathy and embrace. Trainers and professionals working in the childcare and child protection sector could use this book. It provided insights for people interested in or pursuing a career as a social worker.
