Topic > The Pros and Cons of a Cage-Free System - 1103

According to Chad Gregory, president of United Egg Producers, producers will spend approximately $6 billion maintaining the conventional battery cage system over the next 15 years. The transition to a cage-free system means another $4 billion.7 The world faces several problems, such as poverty and hunger. Michele Learner states that more than one billion people suffer from hunger worldwide.8 If the additional $4 billion is dedicated to alleviating hunger or poverty, large numbers of people will benefit from increased food supplies. This is a better consequence. Consequently, consequentialists might argue that money should be spent on addressing world hunger rather than on pursuing a cage-free economy.
