Every garden has its own purposes that cause gardeners to spend a great deal of time caring for them. Gardeners are inventing unique ways to care for their gardens, especially when they profit from it. In his book The Botany of Desire, Michael Pollan states that the best gardeners of his generation dedicated themselves to the cultivation of cannabis, popularly known as marijuana. Intrigued by Pollan's argument, I completely agree with him. Marijuana growers are the best gardeners because they have perfected the plant by growing it at home, they get good business from it, and the plant itself satisfies humans' need for altered, transcendent states of consciousness. The modern prohibition of marijuana has directly led to a revolution in both and culture of the plant. One of the rich ironies of the war on drugs is that the creation of a powerful new taboo against marijuana led directly to the creation of a powerful new plant (105). Every plant develops some mechanical, in this case chemical, defenses to protect itself from potential damage. The chemical that marijuana has driven humans crazy, perhaps even some animals, who are willing to take risks to plant them to satisfy their desire for intoxication and help them forget faster. Even though it is illegal to grow marijuana, people have created a way, or perhaps the plant has created a way, to continue growing it. When Pollan recounted what he had heard from a friend of a friend of his, he said, "One evening I listened to him talk about his work, expounding on the relative benefits of sodium and metal halide lights, the optimal number of clones to plant for kilowatts, and the complexity of hybridizing indica and sativa, emerges... middle of paper... reason why one country banned the plant They are afraid that it will endanger the progress of their civilization in 1484 when Pope Innocent VIII issued a papal condemnation of witchcraft in which he specifically condemned the use of cannabis as an “antisacriment” in satanic worship (138). These taboos appear to have an emotional appeal that greatly influenced the prohibition of the plant. Although dangerous, marijuana is quite potent to make humans continue to work hard to perfect them indoors. After humans perfect the new environment to grow the plant indoors, they get good business from it, and the plant itself successfully satisfies the need for. human for transcendent altered states of consciousness.
