Preventing Injuries and Promoting Safety for Parents and Newborn Caregivers Newborn care has become a common practice incorporated into the health plan. The reason for its development is to ensure that children born with the disease are cared for and that their lives are safeguarded from possible dangers they may encounter in the community. One of the problems affecting newborn care is poverty. When the environment in which children grow up is poor or dangerous, their lives are significantly affected. Poverty is measured in terms of consumption and income levels. In most cases, mothers conceive against their will and this leads to children being subjected to conditions that are not conducive to their growth. When consumption levels and income are low, mothers can hardly afford the good life they would like for their children. This means that the child's life is endangered by unsanitary and despicable living conditions (Kaplan, Turrell, & Lynch, 2001, p. 260). Poverty is therefore one of the major environmental problems that can affect a child's health. When a child born sick lives a poor life, there is little chance of receiving the best health services. Many children born into poor environments receive poor quality health services, making it difficult for them to achieve good health (Murali & Oyebode, 2004, p. 220). Poverty affects both physical and mental health, and malnutrition is one of the physical effects experienced in an environment characterized by poverty. The inability to afford a balanced diet causes individuals to develop health problems including marasmus and kwashiorkor, which are common in the Far East and Africa. The availability of sufficient support funds ensures that the child is protected from malnutrition and infectious diseases (Aber, Bennet, & Conley, 1997, p. 470). Regular vaccinations should also be provided by setting aside sufficient funds to provide for the child's development. . Furthermore, receiving postnatal care is essential as it ensures that the baby is well protected and that its growth is not affected. With adequate postnatal information, the caregiver may be able to assess whether the conditions to which the child is subjected are favorable or not. The caregiver should avoid exposing the child to violent and dangerous conditions to ensure that he or she is protected from physical and mental harm.
