Topic > Argumentative Essay on the Lottery - 1426

Summer, the man who organizes the lottery each year, is described as "a jovial, round-faced man" (420). But as the reader progresses through the story, Mr. Summer's character begins to transform into something more, a serious, heartless person who sees the lottery as an ordinary day. Mr. Summers, the lottery director, is the one who draws Tessie's name from the black box and announces it to those present: "'It's Tessie." . . and his voice was small” (425). Interestingly, Mr. Summers is also the one who seems to have premeditated Tessie's death when he tells her, "I thought we would have to move on without you".”
