Topic > Music as a Means for Social Change: A Comparison…

Throughout the twentieth century, we as a culture seem to remove the scope that delimits the limits of human intellectuality. Through this metaphorical scope, one can see the social and political angst that pushes for radical change to be imposed on educated people around the world. Immediately, with negativity pressed against the bourgeoisie, the rise of Marxian philosophy, European fascism and American taste; we are given the fundamental premise for musical art to follow the trends where there is tension within the new ideology. Among these movements are Dadaism, avant-garde, expressionism, and futurism, to name a few. In response to the emerging manifestos that bring the practical knowledge behind these movements, a shift in cultural perspective occurs. To serve the climate of this social change, much of the art will shape itself around these events. Examples of such actions are the Dadaists against the call for war. Dadaism, the art form resulting from the anti-war attitude, was such a mockery. With the events of the Cabaret Voltaire, the art presented seemed to lack character or purpose, but this paralleled the way the Dadaists viewed the First World War. This essay will discuss how music is used as a tool for social change and how it is reflexive. of the events surrounding him based on his time period. I will take an analytical position on Arnold Schönberg's Pierrot Lunaire and Luciano Berio's Symphony – Mvmt II: O King. The discussion will amplify the similarities and discern the differences between these two works. With these beliefs, I will also illuminate the circumstances in which these works are prevalent in the social environment of the time.Arnold Schoenberg... middle of the paper... but I have highlighted the most important details ranging from the push of the new philosophy, to the mourning of a very important social figure. While the intentions behind the pieces are drastically different, the methods in which the purposes are expressed have very parallel origins. There are many ways in which a composer can represent his music as an instrument for a change in the events of socio-political thought, but the method by which he chooses to pursue this change glorifies his technique in being part of the time period in which they lived. There is a lot of complexity shared between Pierrot Lunaire and Sinfonia that is contained in the social climate, the purpose of the pieces is very different - but at the core of the art objects, the way the piece is composed creates the social context for the piece can live and breathe.
