Bigfoot is a legend that most people grew up with. The mystery surrounding its reality is no longer much of a mystery. Advances in research and recent DNA discoveries support the existence of Bigfoot. According to the historical overview, posted on bigfoot-lives.com, there are stories of Bigfoot dating back 4,000 years. Bigfoot isn't the only term used to describe these creatures. They are also referred to as Sasquatch, Yeti, Wildman, Hairy Man and many other names given depending on the area and culture. The Epic of Gilgamesh was one of the first mentions of such a creature, called the "Wildman". The Epic of Gilgamesh, as reviewed by the historical overview on bigfoot-lives.com, states: “Arura the Potter created the Wild Man's Enkudu from clay. He was shaggy with 'hair that sprouted like corn,' and he ate with the gazelles and drank with the cunning beasts at their watering holes” (CITE A1.) Legends of Bigfoot were passed down in Native American tribes. These legends precede the New World and the arrival of the “white men”. In 986 AD, upon his arrival in the New World, Samuel Ellot Morison wrote of a wild man. In his account of this creature, it is described as "hideously ugly, hairy, dark, and with large black eyes." In British Columbia, the Shalish tribes told stories of a Sasquatch, which translates to "wild man of the woods" (ISCED A2.). Stories of such a creature over extended periods of time, in various geographic locations, and in different cultures allude to the validity of Bigfoot's existence. Exciting new DNA evidence confirms the existence of Bigfoot. ABC News' Kevin Dolak reports that the Sasquatch Genome Project, led by Dr. Melba Ketchum, discovered and tested a hair sample... in the center of the paper... the reliability of its work (CITE F1.) Another factor surrounding skepticism about the existence of Bigfoot is the amount of falsified claims made. Over the years, Bigfoot has become something of a fairy tale. Many sightings have turned out to be nothing more than a hoax. These factors make it difficult for the scientific community to accept the possibility that Bigfoot is anything more than a myth. Each person holds their own opinion on the existence of Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Wildman or Hairy Man. However, with recent technological advances, who are we to reject DNA evidence supporting the validity of such a creature? The story writes itself. The legends are based on some creatures that were found in different eras, cultures and continents. The incredible amount of sightings and footprints that have not been debunked stem from something. That something is Bigfoot.
