For example, the family goes on a fun cross-country trip and ends up getting murdered. O'Connor uses certain types of irony to convey his message about what makes a person good. In the first paragraph Grandma says she would never take her children where there is crime at large and if she did she wouldn't know what to do. However, the grandmother takes the family onto a dirt road that will eventually lead to their death. The irony of the story focuses on the family's communication with the Misfits. “She would have been a good woman, if there had been someone there to shoot her every minute of her life” (O'Connor). The characters don't realize what's happening when death heads right for them, and as a family they grow closer than they ever have, despite being terrible.
