Why did the United States reject the more democratic government for a lesser one? Because the country was moving towards a monarchy or towards an oligarchy. The Confederacy was collapsing and two events clearly demonstrated this; a failed treaty with Spain (date needed) and Shay's Rebellion. If the Founding Fathers had not intervened, the United States would have been dismantled. How could the Founding Fathers have saved the Union and “secured the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity?” (Constitution) They designed the constitution to reject democratic articles to embrace a constitutional form of republican government. So that the freedom of the people was ensured by protecting their freedom from the corruptible nature of man. Any form of "constitutional degeneration was the technical definition of 'corruption'...corruption was the normal direction of constitutional change" (Banning, 174) "Pride of independence holds a deep and dangerous hold on the hearts of many politicians state" (Bennett, 112) The leadership envisioned by the Articles at the state level was more democratic. However, it was heading towards oligarchy, because these men who were in power often only cared about their own state and competed with other states to benefit their own state or their own goals. Politicians were using their power to… Confederation is doomed: “Confederations have proven to be workable only in small countries that do not play a major role in international affairs and can resist or avoid aggressive nations due to special circumstances. The United States harbored the potential of a great power with vast resources, necessitating a strong executive branch.” ( Schweikart, 16-7-Patriot's Reader) The event was created to demonstrate the weakness of state leadership under... middle of paper... etc. the minority of the United States, the Senate. This prevents the men in power at the state level from caring only about their states and more about the nation at large. And it responds to the corruptible nature of man. In response to the will of the people, the presidency was established to give a voice to the people. It was also kept under control by the other two branches and accountable to the people by election. This form of government is less democratic, but guarantees the people's freedom from the people and state leadership. The United States according to the Articles was more democratic, it was designed to “save many important prerogatives for the states and the people.” (Schweikart, 95) However, the state and the people with their democracy failed to maintain their part to maintain the U.S..
