Veazie Street Elementary School has a complex and involved social culture with many different, often harmful, layers that can be studied through a sociological lens. After studying the elementary school, however, it is evident that the school significantly underperforms academically, especially in math skills. To fully understand the interaction between academically struggling elementary schools and society as a whole, it is necessary to address and evaluate each of sociology's three theoretical perspectives. From a macrosocial perspective, low-performing schools can be viewed extremely differently but equally significantly through functionalist and conflict theories, and from a microsocial perspective of symbolic interactionism. To begin, the functionalist perspective must first be outlined which, at its most basic level, “emphasizes the contributions and functions performed by each part of society” (Dias), in this case the under-performing Veazie Street Primary School. In a complex social society most aspects contribute to the well-being and survival of the society, including the consensus of the members of that society (Dias). These contributions according to the functionalist perspective are also symbiotic where various parts of society will compensate and change due to a change in another part. The changes can be explained by two types of human functions. Manifest functions that are obvious and “intended and recognized at the time” (Dias), and latent functions that are not obvious and “unintended and not recognized until later” (Dias). This balancing act of parts of society is central to the functionalist perspective because it tends to produce stability, order, cooperation, and… half the task… of the students scored higher, although there is still a wide margin of profit. percentage who do not have an adequate level of understanding. This shows that symbolic interactionism is truly a microsocial analysis because each individual can subjectively interpret any symbol in everyday life in a different light. Clearly each sociological perspective has something very different to say about how it views the social aspect. of low-performing schools and the interaction they have with society as a whole. While functionalism focuses on some positive aspects and conflict theory supports the competitive tendencies of our societies, it is evident that all three perspectives must be addressed to gain a well-rounded educated opinion on how each of the many individual aspects of society fit into the enormous and complex network that defines our social structure.
