Chapter I. Thoughts on Leadership My personal definition of leadership is sharing personal and professional knowledge with others to build trust, while providing support loyal to your department and senior level leaders. The support provided to subordinates must be absolute and not superficial, thus motivating collaborators to achieve tasks and objectives of the team and the organization. In many formal and informal contexts, we have often heard the word "leadership". Although this term is found in many college-level textbooks, writings, news clippings, courses, and documents, leadership is a constantly evolving concept. Leadership is not an attribute that individuals are born with. Although individuals are born with certain characteristics and traits of a leader, those traits are honed throughout life.Northouse (2010); Kirkpatrick and Locke (1991) suggested that there are six traits that, if perfected, would create the perfect leader. These six traits are: drive, integrity, cognitive ability, confidence, motivation and knowledge of the task. Both Northouse (2010); Kirkpatrick and Locke (1991) believed that individuals who possess these traits are not necessarily born with them, but are also learned. As stated previously, leadership is an ever-evolving practice that one is subjected to throughout one's life. Leadership has countless working parts and theories that many humans can only understand through formal classroom training. However, there are leaders, without formal education and training, who are extremely successful in all aspects of their roles. These leaders focus and thrive on employee relationships. These dynamic leaders use a plethora of styles and theories that help facilitate...... middle of paper ....... "The set of deep beliefs and assumptions - the story - that develops over time in a 'learning organization is so different from the traditional worldview of hierarchical and authoritarian organization that it seems to describe an entirely different world' (Senge, 1994, p. 21). Many individuals are 'guilty as charged', regarding the use of traditional leadership methods. As Theory .When leaders offer employees the opportunity to project input into the major concerns/changes that affect them as a whole, they will see a major organizational change that leads to the teaching organization that Senge envisioned as the guiding concept for US industries of the future.
