A computer and data network is a telecommunications network that allows computers on a network to be connected via cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or beams of infrared light. This facilitates communication and sharing of resources within a huge amount of people in different locations. Better known as the Internet, it is the computer network established using wired or wireless media. The only system used before the 19th century was the postal system and it took several days depending on the distance between sender and recipient. But nowadays thanks to Internet access it is possible to communicate with people in a few seconds, and it does not matter where they live or the distance between sender and recipient. In the past, the US military used the Internet and early communications equipment to communicate with their distant soldiers on the battlefield, but today we can see more than 70% of the world's population using this equipment. A country like Panama, with a population of 3 million, has over 7 million in cell phones alone. Does this represent a technological advance or a threat? “I envision a time when we will be to robots what dogs are to humans, and I root for the machines.” Said by Claude Elwood Shannon, father of digital communication.
