When Eisenhower and Dulles took office in early 1953, the main concern of international political life was the spread of communism. Since 1901 the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, owned primarily by the British government, had contributed to the extraction, refining and sale of Iranian oil. In the spring of 1951, Mohammad Mossadegh came to power. He was determined to expel the Anglo-Iranian oil company, nationalize the oil industry and use the money generated to develop Iran. In the spring of 1951, both houses of the Iranian parliament voted unanimously in favor of nationalizing the oil industry. The British government was outraged by this decision. They planned to overthrow the government themselves, but failed because Mossadegh learned of their plans. The only option left was for the Americans to lead the overthrow of the Iranian government. The British government had already shared its plans with the head of CIA operations in the Middle East (Kermit Roosevelt). The British knew that if they asked for help from the Americans they would need a stronger argument that would push them to act in their favor, Woodhouse (agents sent to deliver the message) told the Americans that Mossadegh was leading Iran towards communism (which was a lie). Kermit Roosevelt was assigned the task of overthrowing the Iranian government. Kermit managed to make the Iranian streets unstable, but this was not enough to overthrow Mossadegh. In the third attempt, Roosevelt used two of his best Iranian agents who had excellent relationships with Tehran's street gangs. Roosevelt told them that he wished to use the gangs to stage riots throughout the city. Mossadegh eventually surrendered after an attack on his home and was placed under arrest. General Zahedi has become the new Iranian entrepreneur... state companies prosper in Chile and American and Chilean problems diminish. After speaking with key contacts, the United States decided to finish the job before Allende took office. The CIA used propaganda, economic disruption, and was prepared to use Chile's military might, but the United States was unable to prevent Allende from taking office in short order. Congress met on October 24 and, by a vote of 153 to 24, certified his election. He was inaugurated on November 4. The Nixon administration decided to overthrow him again with the help of the CIA. When the coup d'état began under General Augusto Pinochet (Chile's commander in chief appointed by Allende), Allende decided to make his last stand at La Moneda (presidential palace. He was found dead after two Hawker Hunter fighters bombed the palace. His death symbolized a victory for the CIA and the United States.
