Since 2009, when programs like "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom" aired, there has been much debate about whether these programs condone or condemn teen pregnancy behavior. teenage pregnancy. The shows examined the lives of teenage girls during pregnancy and in the years after. In The Media's Glamorization of Teen Pregnancy, author Briana Bosworth suggests that these MTV programs do not accurately portray what the life of a teenage mother would be like and that they create celebrities out of the teenagers on the show. Bosworth is not alone in her position as comparing the salaries and lifestyles of teen moms and those who are unacknowledged teen mothers leads to the same conclusion that MTV has glamorized the life of a teen mother. According to an article by Katy Hall, in 2010, the average salary for teen moms was between $60,000 and $65,000 per season (Hall). Even if a teen mother worked a part-time job paying $24 an hour, she would still only earn $23,040 a year. In 2010, the poverty line for a family of two, such as a mother and child, was $14,570 (The HHS). This means that a single mother would live just above the poverty line, even with a well-paid part-time job. MTV's appeal to teen pregnancy is evident in the salaries of these mothers alone. None of the episodes show how mothers should struggle to make ends meet, instead most show more emotional struggles that mothers face when dealing with relationships with the people in their lives.
