“Left Neglect… is a true neurological syndrome that occurs due to damage to the right hemisphere of the brain, as might follow a right hemisphere stroke” (Genoa 323 ). Lisa Genova, author of “Left Neglected,” explores the baffling neurological disorder of Left Neglect through the eyes of Sarah Nickerson. Sarah is a multitasking champion who holds a prestigious position as Vice President of Human Resources at Berkley Consulting, is a mother of three children, and wife to her husband Bob Nickerson, who also holds a prestigious position at another company. Life for Sarah is busy, fast-paced and constantly moving. If it's not something work-related, then it's her kids or other priorities that seem to pile up as Sarah progresses in her life. Her hectic life suddenly ends, as one day she is involved in a serious car accident. Sarah's next memory is waking up in the hospital's intensive care unit and learning that she has suffered a brain injury that has caused a condition known as Left Neglect, and this is where Sarah's journey through the novel begins. it seems that the cliché phrase "mind over matter" really connects to many of the experiences and symptoms Sarah has suffered as a result of her sinister negligence. In reality, an individual experiences two sides of the world, the left and the right. The traumatic brain injury suffered from the accident caused Sarah's mind to completely dissociate from the left. Sarah's entire left side became nonexistent. It didn't matter what was actually in front of Sarah, what mattered was what her mind drew attention to. It seems that Genova has ripped a page straight from the Twilight Zone, because initially one could only imagine that this disorder existed in... middle of paper... a relatively normal and happy life with her family in their new home in Vermont adapting to his new mental environment. In conclusion, "Left Neglected" really helps you understand the importance of the brain and the huge effects an injury can have. An injury in itself is life threatening, healing may not even occur. You may need to make huge life changes. The brain is the life force of every living animal and it is important to realize that further understanding the areas of the brain and how they are interconnected in forming the reality that every human can see can only help solve the problems of people like Sarah. Nickerson. For now the first step to take is prevention and perhaps driving a little more slowly to go to work when we are on the motorway.Works citedGenova, Lisa. Left Neglected: A Novel.
