Topic > The United States Needs More Education in Agriculture - 1912

Farming EducationA bend in the highway's endless pavement takes the car around a hill. While turning, little faces press against the windows on the right side of the car. There is no worry about noses being crushed as children squeal with delight at the cows grazing on the lush green hills. A competition takes place to see who can count the most calves before the car follows the road around another hill and the cattle disappear from sight. Although all children are enchanted by cattle, goats, sheep, horses, pigs, ducks and anything else they don't have at home, they seem to have little knowledge of what the real purpose of these animals is. Children attending public schools currently are not sufficiently exposed to agriculture in their classrooms. The need for agricultural education is growing; the public needs to be informed about the success of agriculture in the Golden State of California, the wide range of life skills that agriculture can teach students, and how many future career options there are in agriculture. A common misconception is that the term “agriculture” refers only to agriculture. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, agriculture is the science, art, or practice of cultivating soil, producing crops, raising livestock, and preparing and marketing the resulting products. Although farming is an important aspect of farming, the term also applies to the preparation and marketing of items produced by farmers. Although the term “agriculture” refers to a very broad range of topics, many people are unaware of how important agriculture is. If students in America's public education system were to be taught agriculture, the industry would make more money than......half of the paper......n, students and adults, would be able to live by the words of the creed of the FFA, so that we may all "believe that American agriculture can and will be true to the best traditions of our nation's life..."
