Mary Kaylin VeachMrs. DuffeyAP English April 127, 2014Career Research PaperDentistry is a healthcare profession that for some people is a rewarding field. This career consists of very tedious work to perform preventive and restorative treatments on the teeth. A dentist's main job is to work with patients to decide on a plan for caring for their teeth. Dentists will fill cavities, take x-rays, repair fractured teeth, apply protective sealants, replace missing teeth, educate patients about unhealthy foods, and many other tasks to make sure their patients have healthy teeth (Coin Career Library). Dentists use many tools such as mouth mirrors, excavators, amalgam carriers, condensers, carvers, explorers, periodontal probes, and ball burners to perform these tasks. Dentists are responsible for keeping a record of each patient's health care and if they cannot carry out the task for the patient, they can refer him to a specialist (Basic Dental Instruments). There are many types of specialties in dentistry. Endodontist, orthodontist, and oral surgeon are occupations associated with general dentistry, but are more detailed in their work. Endodontists deal with the dental pulp and periradicular tissues, mainly by performing root canals. Orthodontists correct the skeletal structure of teeth, primarily by extracting teeth and applying corrective braces. Oral surgeons diagnose and treat diseases of the mouth, performing surgery on whatever the problem is and extracting wisdom teeth (American Dental Association). After a dental hygienist cleans the patient's teeth, the dentist goes behind the patient and checks for cavities. If there are cavities, another appointment will be made. The main job of dentists is to fill cavities. If deca......middle of paper......ges, etc." My grandfather graduated from college with a bachelor's degree in biology and a bachelor's degree in chemistry, and four years later graduated DMD from the school of dentistry. He said the best part of his job was treating the whole person (body, mind and spirit) and interacting day in and day out. His least favorite part of the job was dealing with fearful and uncooperative patients His advice to me was to learn how to run a profitable business, love people and dream big (Howell) Last summer I worked at a dental office to make sure I liked the career path I was choosing as well so much during that experience. One thing I didn't know was that pediatrics was a specialty, which means I will have to go through another 2-4 years of school. Dentistry is such an interesting profession and I can't wait to look into it closely career.
