Thanks to the Apis Mellifera or the Western Bee you have the food you eat. In California's almond orchards, every spring bees come to pollinate, earning billions of dollars without being paid, producing more than $15 billion. In June, an entire grocery store in Rhode Island campaigned on stopping the sale of anything that depends on pollination to demonstrate how important honeybees are. Bees “hold agriculture together.” Bees are disappearing. The beekeepers opened their hives to find combs, wax and honey, but no bees. Beekeepers reported this to concerned scientists, who responded as colony collapse disorder. After seven years, bees continue to die to an extent never seen before, it's a mystery. 1/3 of bee colonies in the United States have disappeared or died and 42% increased over the past years during the winter. Colony losses are affecting industry and agriculture. There weren't enough bees in the United States to produce spring pollination of almonds, putting $4 billion at risk. Risking almonds being the Golden State's most valuable agricultural export, worth double the price of Ionian wine grapes and most dependent on bees. Fruits and vegetables that also depend on bees can impact farmers' ability to increase yields. As Jeff Pettis, a research leader at the US Department of Agriculture's Bee Research, says, "the take-home message is that we are very close to the limit." Scientists are working to understand what is causing the disappearance of bees. Pesticides are one of the causes, especially neonicotinoids, which also disturb insects. There is a parasitic mite that has been bothering bee colonies since they were introduced to the United States. Other factors may be bacterial and viral diseases. Albert Einstei...... middle of paper ......development of a bee genome archive for crossbreeding honey bees. Beekeepers spent money to provide food for their colonies. Replacing honey with sugar or corn syrup can weaken bees. Few beekeepers could work on large operations to produce profits to pay for the equipment needed to help the environment. Bees could end up being fed like other animals. No beekeeper wants to see it, but it's the only solution. As long as there are fruits and vegetables that need pollination and farmers are willing to help them survive. If the bees survive, then it won't be what we thought it would be. In June, a company sprayed insecticides on trees and 50,000 bumblebees were killed. The man does not care for the bumblebee. Millions of animal species die every year without anyone realizing it. This is what happens when a species becomes so widespread and dominant.
