Topic > Pros and Cons of For-Profit Prisons - 1034

Overcrowding is a problem not only found in for-profit facilities, but in all facilities. If there was funding to provide more housing units for inmates, there would be fewer assaults by staff and inmates. I believe this is a huge negative in the context of profit, it is bad enough that assaults on staff and inmates occur as often as they do in state and federal facilities. If more staff are taken out of the equation, the likelihood of assaults by staff and inmates increases. Bottom line, for-profit prisons do just that, they look for ways to profit by cutting corners and providing substandard living conditions for inmates. This poses a significant risk in many ways, including extreme overcrowding in private facilities, lack of medical care, lack of nutritious meals, and decreased numbers of staff in the facilities. Staff are not paid as much as they should for the number of hours they work in the facilities, also causing risks to staff safety and security
