Arson is one of the oldest recognized crimes in the world. It is defined as intentional and malicious fire of a structure or building (Montaldo). Arson can cost people's lives and the damage can be expensive. In 2010, approximately 260,600 fires occurred (“arson and intentional fire,” n.d.). Many of these fires were set intentionally. These fires resulted in approximately 390 deaths, 1,340 injuries, and $1.2 billion in damage (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” n.d.). Most fires occurred outdoors, but the majority of deaths, injuries, and losses occurred inside structures, particularly homes (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” n.d.). Arson is considered a property crime by law enforcement, although the fires created by the arsonist can injure and kill many people. This paper will discuss the history of arson and explain why arson is difficult to prove, why people commit it and will also provide examples of specific cases and suggestions on what people can do to reduce the risk of arson. As stated, arson is recognized as one of the oldest crimes around. It was a crime under English common law. English common law was produced by King Henry II, who ruled England from 1154 to 1189. In this legal system, sentences passed by the king's courts were based on the common customs of the country. Many buildings in that period were made of very dry wood. When these wooden buildings were set on fire by arsonists, they could burn and spread rapidly. The more damage caused, the greater the consequences for the arsonists. Unlike in the past, today arson can be committed in different forms. The expansion now includes not only damaging another individual's home with fire, but...middle of paper...and arson means having effective security. One way to reduce the risk of a malicious attack on your home is to install an intruder alarm system which can help keep the potential arsonist away. People can also install fire alarms and fire extinguishers and store matches, lighters or dangerous and flammable liquids in a safe place. To prevent arsonists from entering your home, people should close all windows and lock all doors before leaving. In conclusion, I will reiterate the main points. First, I covered the arson story. Second, I explained why arson is difficult to prove and prosecute in court. Third, I proposed the reasons why arsonists commit the crime. Fourth, I gave examples of specific cases of famous arsonists, and finally, I gave some ideas on how people can reduce the risk of arson in their home.
