Topic > Representations of May '68 in French memory - 1459

The événements (events) of 1968 are well rooted in the collective memory of French society. More than a hundred books reflecting on the meaning and importance of that year in France were published, and many other discussions took place. Without a doubt, it is difficult to understand what '68 meant for many activists then and what it means for them today. Daniel A. Gordon, Robert Gildea and Bertram Gordon try to organize the different thoughts and perspectives on 1968 in their articles. Their divergent but sometimes overlapping opinions put their articles under review due to the varied literature available that sheds light on the memories of '68 in France from different angles. The first article “Memories of May '68: France's Convenient Consensus” by Daniel A Gordon, published in 2012, comes from the twentieth volume and second issue of the magazine Modern & Contemporary France. In his brief review of Memory of May '68: France's Convenient Consensus by Chris Reynolds, Daniel Gordon states that Reynolds has well demonstrated that the memories of '68 are reduced to that single month (May) during which the 'children' of Le Elite societies lead a revolt against the political framework in which they grew up. The second article "Utopia and conflict in the oral testimonies of French activists from 1968" by Robert Gildea, published in 2013, is taken from the sixth volume and first publication of the journal Memory Studies. The material for this article comes from the 2007-2011 pan-European project entitled “Around 1968: activism, networks, trajectories”. In the published piece, Gildea brings together five interviews with former activists carried out in 1968 in France. These interviews are then explored through the shadow of two emerging narratives of culture… middle of paper… all influenced by a feeling of activism and revolt. In contrast, Daniel Gordon's article mentions nothing about this phenomenon. But it should also be kept in mind that this paper is simply a book review and therefore does not incorporate all of the analysis contained in Reynold's Memories of May '68: France's Convenient Consensus.Works CitedGildea, Robert (2008) “1968 in 2008”.
