One Soldier's War Themes The Vietnam War was difficult for the country to handle, let alone a single soldier. Many soldiers faced various personal and physiological effects of this war. This war in Vietnam was unlike any other war. This war was unconventional, when we first entered it was more about fighting the spread of communism, then it slowly changed over the years. Going to Vietnam was different in every way from the battle conditions, climate and heavy jungle environment. During the war some soldiers were willing to go and fight while others were not and opposed the war. Most of the US public did not oppose this war until it seemed like a battle that could never be won in the long term. In both books the main characters describe how the war seemed like it would never end. The guerrilla warfare was unlike anything our soldiers had ever seen before. Soldiers fought daily with enemies hiding right under their noses. These books revealed the profound truth of soldiers' personal experiences and showed us that war affected soldiers, regardless of which side of the battlefield they were fighting for and the ideals each of them personally held. The Vietnam War impacted soldiers in many different ways. Most soldiers witnessed gruesome violence and lost friends to the horrors of war on both sides during battles. In the book The Sorrow of War he enlightened us on the thoughts and effects of the war, as well as opened the point of view on the North Vietnamese side. Many soldiers who fought in Vietnam carried emotional and physical wounds and these would remain with them for the rest of their lives.
