Edgar Allan Poe was a gothic writer who lived in the early 1800's. Poe had a very rough and tough life and in his stories you could see how much he was a troubled man. He blazed the trail for today's writers. Literature wouldn't be the same without Poe's influence. Most of his stories are bloody and deal with death as in The Fall of the House of Usher and The Raven. They are some of Poe's best works. Poe uses Gothic elements in "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "The Raven" to portray the dark side of human nature. The Crow is the story of a man who mourns the loss of his wife and one night of a bird. he flies into the house repeating the same word, “never again”. A mysterious and dark atmosphere is presented in this story. “There darkness and nothing more” (Poe 24). When Poe opens the door for the first time, he cannot see anything or anyone, creating a mysterious atmosphere. The raven is very mysterious. It doesn't do anything. He simply sits on a perch in his living room repeating "never again." Another worldly element is present in this poem. The narrator believes the bird is evil. "Tell me...
