In today's world the vast majority of the population owns a mobile phone. Mobile phones are an important part of people's daily lives. Since the 1940s, when cell phones first became available in automobiles, phone companies have made great strides in making cell phones more efficient, much smaller, and more accessible to everyone. There was a time when only wealthy people had these types of cell phones. Today, people of all social classes own cell phones. They are extremely affordable and have the ability to do just about anything you can think of. There is an "app" for everything. You can make phone calls, send text messages, browse the web, pay bills, read books, stay up to date on social media, and even listen to music, all from a small, portable device. Cell phones play a huge role in today's economy. Companies like AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint have become huge public companies with large holdings in the stock market. Between these companies and many other telephone companies they have created millions of jobs and opportunities. Mobile phone companies have now created so-called “smart phones”. These phones are typically slim and sleek and have countless versatile capabilities. However, cell phones haven't always been this "smart" or small. When telephones became available to the public they were not considered mobile in today's sense of the term. They were available for installation in an automobile, were large and bulky, and required and consumed a lot of energy to operate. Telephone networks would support only a few simultaneous conversations. Since then, cell phones have made huge improvements in efficiency, capacity, and size. The first portable cell phone wasn't produced until 1973. The origins... middle of paper... date back to the 1970s and show no signs of slowing down. The opportunities and possibilities offered by this technology are endless and are constantly increasing. Cell phones have enabled economic growth and millions of jobs. This technology has come with its share of moral problems, but nothing that can't be prevented by teaching awareness and using caution when using a cell phone. The positive aspects created by this technology far outweigh the negative side effects, and in my opinion, the social impact this technology has had on this world has been nothing short of extraordinary.
