After the September 11 attacks, many Americans labeled Muslims in the United States as a risk to our country because they share their religion with the extremists responsible of September 11th world terrorism. Muslims living in America continue to face isolation and danger because of their faith. Many people are responsible for this labeling, including journalists, politicians and religious fanatics. Those primarily responsible for giving Muslims in America a modern-day scarlet letter are the extremists themselves. After the September 11 attacks, classmates, employers, and, at some level, the U.S. government exhibited prejudice against the Muslim religion. Muslims working in the United States have been targeted. Since the attacks took place, hundreds of Muslims have been fired and harassed by their employers because of their faith. Trans State Airlines fired first officer Mohammed Hussein because of his Arab appearance and Islamic beliefs. Hussein had an outstanding work history and was unable to reason with the allegations that led to his dismissal. School-going Muslims across the United States have also faced discrimination. School-age children of Middle Eastern origin have been beaten and abused by their own classmates. An Iraqi boy named Osama was repeatedly harassed because of his name. The United States government has also been antagonistic towards the Islamic religion since the attacks took place. Some Muslims who applied for citizenship had their background checks illegally postponed. Federal raids directed against “terrorists” in the United States have targeted people recognized as Muslim leaders. None of these Muslims had any connection to terrorism. One of them, Dr Al Alwani, was an outspoken critic of extremism and… members of the newspaper… used the same words before committing suicidal actions. The links between terrorism and Islam are clearly highlighted when extremists claim they are waging a “holy war” against their enemies. Extremists have used Islam as justification to attack churches, Hindu and Buddhist temples. Since the terrorist who carried out such criminal and inhumane acts associates himself with the Muslim religion, public opinion comes to consider Islam as a serious risk. In reality, only 15% of the billion Muslims are extremists and of that 15% only a few participate in terrorist activities. However, most news stories focus not on the places where things are good, but on those where things are bad. Because of all this, it is clear that extremists play a major role in attributing the Scarlet Letter to Muslims in the United States..
