In an interview Katie Couric sat down with Cox and transgender model Carmen Carrera to discuss their experiences as high-profile transgender women. However, Couric seemed “ ...especially interested in talking to both women about their genitals, in order to 'educate' others who may not be 'familiar with transgenders'” (McDonough 2014). questions are or are not appropriate in a social context. No cisgender woman should answer questions about her genitals in a television interview, yet these inappropriate questions are ones that trans women are faced with all too often whether or not they fit the mainstream media's view of what a woman is - a person whose gender identity and genitals coincide - results in a complete disregard for what would otherwise be a clearly taboo subject. Furthermore, his use of “transgender” as a noun shows a clear lack of understanding of even the most basic rhetoric used to describe trans individuals, once again underscoring the linguistic divide between cis-gender woman and trans-gender woman.
