The narrator of the story “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe is a external friend of the two main characters. The two main characters are Madeleine and Roderick. The narrator has been summoned by his childhood friend Roderick who is going through a period of emotional distress. The narrator discovers that Roderick's twin sister Madeleine is also ill. The situation worsens shortly after the narrator's arrival. The plot of Poe's tale essentially involves a woman dying, being buried, and rising from the grave. Upon arriving at the Usher's house, the narrator witnesses an internal conflict. He wants to help his friend Roderick Usher, but is very upset by the state of the house. The narrator seems to be slightly apprehensive about helping his friend at times, even though he actually has the best intentions at heart. The narrator also has an internal conflict towards Roderick Usher. “Its owner, Roderick Usher, had been one of my lucky companions in childhood; but many years had passed since our last meeting. Recently, however, a letter had reached me in a distant part of the country - a letter from him - which, in its extremely importunate nature, admitted of nothing more than a personal reply. (Page 2) The narrator is wary of Roderick because they haven't seen each other in a long time and he knows very little about him and the difficulties he currently faces. Unfortunately, due to communication problems, Madeline was buried alive. Roderick starts hearing noises and becomes very worried thinking that he actually buried his sister alive. Her fear comes true when Madeline is drenched in blood-stained sheets from trying to escape the barrial. Madeline then collapses on top of her twin brother. His brother then dies in shock, the narrator then runs out of the house just in time to see the house collapse.
