“Shooting became like drinking a glass of water,” said Ishmael Beah, a former child soldier, “children who refused to fight, kill, or showed any weakness were been treated mercilessly." As the involvement of children in armed conflicts continues to increase, “Child Soldiers” becomes an increasingly popular phrase in newspapers and news broadcasts. Many, however, have no in-depth insight into what actually lies behind simply “300,000 cold-blooded child murderers” (The Economist, December 10, 1998). A simple question: “What do child soldiers fight for?” covers a wide range of elements including wealth, fame or simply surviving. The issue of child soldiers has been present throughout human history and is becoming increasingly serious. The constitution of child soldiers, their efficiency and purpose in fighting serve as excellent examples that can fully demonstrate how children become child soldiers and their crucial role in world conflicts. While the Los Angeles Times describes “[t]he use of children as soldiers in armed conflicts is among the most morally repugnant practices in the world,” former United Nations Secretary Kofi Annan expressed his anger and sorrow in his speech on child soldiers stating that: "I consider their existence to be our greatest failure. " By risking the lives and futures of an entire generation by placing them on the battlefield, various rebel armies cause Central Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and South America to be perceived as the most concentrated region of children soldier around the world According to United Nations statistics, approximately 800,000 child soldiers currently serve in armies, militias or rebel armed forces, while 300,000 of them are currently combatants in war. .. middle of paper.... ..
